I keep seeing the terms “trading bot” and “automated trading” used almost interchangeably, and I’m wondering whether they actually mean the same thing. I understand that a bot can automatically place trades according to certain rules, but I’m not sure whether automated trading includes other types of software as well. I’m currently learning the basics and don’t have a technical background, so some of the terminology gets confusing pretty quickly. I’d like to understand the difference before I start comparing specific tools. It would also be useful to know what features matter when choosing a bot, because some platforms seem to offer dozens of settings that I probably wouldn’t even know how to use.
The terminology can definitely be confusing because different providers use the terms in slightly different ways. A basic introduction to automated trading can help put the different approaches into context. In general, trading bots are one way of implementing automated trading, usually by following a set of programmed rules. Other automated systems may provide different forms of analysis, portfolio management or execution tools. When comparing a particular bot, I’d focus on what it actually does rather than the label used in the marketing. Look at supported markets, strategy configuration, risk controls, testing options, fees and security. If you’re new to the subject, having fewer settings that you understand may be more useful than having a huge number of advanced options that remain unexplained.
